2017 Month of Service
Mid-Iowa Council would like to promote our 2017 Month of Service. During the month of April your Scouting Unit is encouraged to participate in a service project for your community. This could be a project to help your Charter Organization, your school, your town, or another project that helps the community.
Take pictures of your service projects and hashtag them wi th #GoodTurn17 or email them with a discription to midiowa.councilbsa@scouting.org and we will spotlight a few of your effforts on our Council Facebook Page.
Keep track of the number of Scouts and adults that are helping and how many hours they help. This information is then recorded on the Service Hours Website: https://servicehours.scouting.org/UI/Security/Login.aspx
One option for your service project is our Annual Good Turn for Goodwill Project. During this project Scouts will drop off bags at homes in their area with instructions about donating to Goodwill. On Saturday, April 8th the Scouts would then return and collect the bags and items to be donated and drop them off at a local Goodwill store.
Contact your District Executive to get your bags. Click Here
Governor's Luncheon for Scouting
Our goal was to make the 8th annual Governor’s Luncheon for Scouting memorable, successful, and meaningful to the boys and girls who will be tomorrow’s leaders. With your generous help, we did just that!
We are very proud to report we successfully filled the ballroom with over 700 guests and raised more than $205,000 for Scouting programs!
We want to personally thank Governor Branstad, Event Chair, Dan Houston, all of our sponsors, Vice Chair, Table Hosts, and guests for being a part of the 2017 Governor’s Luncheon for Scouting. Your generosity not only helped fill the ballroom with guests for the event, it also help us raised even more support for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. We are blessed to see our community coming together in support of both Scouting organizations.
Click HERE view the highlights of the luncheon.
Investing in Scouts is investing in the future - by providing opportunities for growth, character development, and more. On behalf of both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, thank you for your support of tomorrow’s leaders.

Mitigwa's Future Forest Program
Mid-Iowa Council is pleased to announce Phase 4 of Mitigwa Scout Reservation’s Future Forest Program.
Mitigwa's forested ridges and trails have been providing memorable experiences for Scouts and Scouters for more than 90 years. While many of the trees shading camp today were already mature when the camp was new, old trees eventually become unsafe around buildings and campsites and need to be replaced. Newly developed areas of camp benefit from trees planted to add shade, increase beauty, provide wind protection, and improve wildlife habitat. The Future Forest Program is a long-term effort to meet those needs and insure that Mitigwa's forests remain safe, healthy, and beautiful.
The 2017 tree planting is scheduled for Saturday, May 20. Using native species grown very close to Mitigwa, interested volunteers, Scouts, and members of the Order of the Arrow will be planting trees at designated sites around camp.
Individuals and units can help our forests by sponsoring one or more trees. Each tree costs $100, which covers the cost of the tree, mulching, deer protection, and ongoing care. Tree sponsors are invited to join us and help plant the future:
Saturday, May 20, 2017
9:00am to Noon
Check-in at Deere Conference Center
Tree sponsorships and registration for tree planting can be made online at www.midiowacouncilbsa.org.
Be a part of the future – plant a tree at Mitigwa!
The trees you sponsor will help ensure our forests for the next generation of Mitigwa campers.
Tour & Activity Plan Terminated
Effective April 1, 2017 Tour and Activity Plans will no longer be required. We recognize that those who were using the tool may wish to know why so the following FAQs have been developed.
Q. What does this mean for me, my unit, my council, and the Scouting family?
A.
Reduces complexity, cutting back on processes and paperwork for unit leaders.
Increases consistency with the Commitment to Safety, the Guide to Safe Scouting, Risk Assessment Strategy, as well as Camp Standards planning tools.
Changes the conversation, engaging everyone in risk-based planning vs. process.
Q. What is the new process?
A. There is no required process, although Scouters are reminded to conduct the Scouting program consistent with BSA rules, regulations, and policies. Flexible risk assessment tools are summarized in the Guide to Safe Scouting, and detailed in the Enterprise Risk Management Guidebook.
Q. Will there be a replacement for the Tour and Activity Plan?
A. No.
Q. Why are you terminating the plan?
A. In addition to the above reasons, the BSA has adopted a flexible risk assessment strategy for your use. This is summarized in the Guide to Safe Scouting, and detailed in the Enterprise Risk Management Guidebook. Knowing and running the program as designed includes numerous safety features.
Q. This is the first I’m hearing of this, why?
A. The termination of the plan is effective on April 1, 2017.
Q. Will the entire activity plan idea go away?
A. No, having a plan is part of “Be Prepared.” Planning is integral into t.he program literature
