BSA Incident Reporting Policy
A key responsibility that all Scout leaders share is providing an effective program that meets the needs of young people and provides the proper health and safety of everyone.
It is important that we sustain the safe operation of our programs. Timely and complete incident reports are critical to identifying needed improvement of programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America.
What Is an Incident?
Loosely defined, an incident is any unplanned event that results in harm to an individual, property, or the environment. This includes incidents that may not result in harm but are considered a “near miss”. ANY incident that requires the intervention of medical personnel, involves emergency responders, or results in a response beyond Scout-rendered first aid must be reported.
Why Report an Incident?
The information reported from incidents is valuable in preventing the reoccurrence of similar incidents. Reporting incidents promptly is also critical so we can respond in an appropriate manner.
How Do I Report an Incident?
Use the BSA Incident Report Form. Click Here
Report Writing Tips
It is imperative that you fill out any incident reports as thoroughly as possible. This will help bring clarity to the situation and avoid unnecessary calls or emails for additional information. Photographs of the site, facilities, vehicles, or equipment can add value to the report. The following examples demonstrate a good, better, and best approach to incident reporting. Remember to include only pertinent facts about the incident. Do not assign blame or include personal opinions or recommendations.

WEATHER-RELATED SAFETY
SUMMARY
Robert Baden-Powell once said the definition of the Scout motto Be Prepared is this: “A Scout must prepare himself by previous thinking out and practicing how to act on any accident or emergency so that he is never taken by surprise.” Baden-Powell also advocated that young men spend a lot of time learning in and about the out-of-doors, as he said, “The open-air is the real objective of Scouting and the key to its success.” However, we still need to be aware of our surroundings and their changing conditions, including what is happening with the weather.

Mitigwa's Future Forest Program
Mid-Iowa Council is pleased to announce Phase 4 of Mitigwa Scout Reservation’s Future Forest Program.
Mitigwa's forested ridges and trails have been providing memorable experiences for Scouts and Scouters for more than 90 years. While many of the trees shading camp today were already mature when the camp was new, old trees eventually become unsafe around buildings and campsites and need to be replaced. Newly developed areas of camp benefit from trees planted to add shade, increase beauty, provide wind protection, and improve wildlife habitat. The Future Forest Program is a long-term effort to meet those needs and insure that Mitigwa's forests remain safe, healthy, and beautiful.
The 2017 tree planting is scheduled for Saturday, May 20. Using native species grown very close to Mitigwa, interested volunteers, Scouts, and members of the Order of the Arrow will be planting trees at designated sites around camp.
Individuals and units can help our forests by sponsoring one or more trees. Each tree costs $100, which covers the cost of the tree, mulching, deer protection, and ongoing care. Tree sponsors are invited to join us and help plant the future:
Saturday, May 20, 2017
9:00am to Noon
Check-in at Deere Conference Center
Tree sponsorships and registration for tree planting can be made online at www.midiowacouncilbsa.org.
Be a part of the future – plant a tree at Mitigwa!
The trees you sponsor will help ensure our forests for the next generation of Mitigwa campers.
